The St. Louis Rams are set up very well to trade down in the draft. With two first-round picks this year, the team could easily move down from the No. 2 spot and acquire more picks for later rounds. Several teams have taken interest in the No. 2 pick in order in anticipation of the Houston Texans drafting Johnny Manziel No. 1 overall. As the Rams admit to listening to several offers, the team is bringing players that hint as their intentions of using the pick over trading it.
General manager Les Snead admits that the Rams have been in discussions with a few teams about a price tag for the No. 2 pick. Many believe the Texans will draft a quarterback, leaving either Jadeveon Clowney or Sammy Watkins primed for the picking with the second pick. Snead said that right now all talks are merely flirtatious, as the team is undecided what path to take in the draft.
"We have had some conversations with multiple teams," Snead said, via MMQB.com. "They're more flirtatious calls than anything. We have numbers 2 and 13, but Houston has number one. Nobody can really seriously chat with us until they are happy with at least two players. I think what might happen as we get closer to the draft, maybe it comes to fruition what Houston is going to do, maybe it doesn't, you have more serious talks probably the week of the draft going, 'Hey, if our player is there at 2, this is what we're going to offer.' I think it will get more serious."
The Rams are set up already that they do not need to necessarily draft that early. They have a franchise quarterback in Sam Bradford. They have a premier pass rusher. They have a solid offensive line. However, the wide receiver position is still lacking, meaning the team may keep the pick and grab Sammy Watkins.
The move would be a bit disappointing. Last season, the team draft Tavon Austin in the first round. Then they drafted Stedman Bailey in the third round. However, both players were not exactly as productive as their draft stock indicated they might be. The Rams looked at several free agents during the offseason and signed Kenny Britt, but he is not a No. 1 target. The Rams still need to add one more star to the corps.
The Rams could also grab Clowney despite already having Robert Quinn who is coming off a solid season. The Rams use of the No. 2 pick will be determined by Houston. The team will not make a deal until they are on the clock and know exactly who Houston selected. If Clowney or Watkins are available, St. Louis might not be as inclined to trade the pick as originally assumed.
