The NY Yankees and Boston Red Sox are playing on Thursday to start a four game series at Yankee Stadium and the matchup is live on TV from the MLB Network and YES and will be streaming live from the MLB.com main website and comes as the teams are tied in the division and this will be the first time they play as AL East rivals in 2014.
The trip to the Bronx is the first big series for the Yankees and Red Sox this season and it will also be the first chance that newly-signed Jacoby Ellsbury gets to face his old team and this time it will be in front of friendly fans. This offseason Ellsbury followed many other players that have done it in the past and now he is the latest to migrate south and of the new players the Yankees signed among Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Masahiro Tanaka the former Beantown star has been the best of the bunch and he is rising a hot streak heading into the game against the Sawx.
Last season Ellsbury was great once again with a .298 average and 52 steals that led the majors and now he is with the Yankees after signing a deal with over $150 million over the next seven seasons and he will get the chance to show off for his old buddies on Thursday night. Tanaka was solid in his first start at the Stadium on Thursday and despite leaving the game with a lead he ended up getting a ND after the Yanks allowed the Orioles to come back on Shawn Kelley and now the team has some injuries to deal with, as David Robertson is out for a bit and so is Mark Teixeira and Joe Girardi likely will use a bullpen committee to patch things together until he can get back.
Girardi has not had to deal with much at closer since taking over the Yankees, as he had Mariano Rivera for years and the one season he was injured the team had Rafael Soriano ready to take over and he had over 40 saves that season, 42 to be exact in some irony with Rivera. But quickly in 2014 the team has a crisis at closer with Robertson out and now they will have to scramble a bit and that could have an impact on the series this weekend.
The Yankees have a tough opening month against a number of AL East opponents and while it's still early, they would like to get off to a nice start in the division. The team comes into the day in the top 10 in batting average and they will get the chance to sharpen that this weekend against the Red Sox.
