NY Yankees Rumors: Mark Teixeira Returning As Ike Davis Trade With Mets Not Needed, Joel Hanrahan Free Agent Option For New York At Closer?

Apr 18, 2014 12:14 PM EDT

The NY Yankees have been dealing with a high amount of injuries early in the season in 2014, but they are about to get some relief, as Mark Teixeira may return this weekend for the team and as that goes down, New York was one of 18 teams to watch Joel Hanrahan throw and he could be an option to replace the injured David Robertson, while the Mets also are interested.

The Yankees will not need to pull off a trade right now to help replace Teixeira, as his injury was not considered serious after he had a grade 1 hamstring strain, but with other players on the mend, they could look for deals down the line. According to ESPN.com, Teixeira may return on Sunday, as manager Joe Girardi said that Sunday was possible and he is coming off of a short appearance in a minor league game earlier in the week and he looks ready to return after working out and running the bases without any issues.

Yankees fans were ready for a Teixeira injury this season, as he missed nearly all last season with a wrist injury, but luckily that is not what Teixeira hurt early in the year in 2014. Teixeira was placed on the DL after just four games and now he could return after dealing with the hamstring injury. David Robertson can come off the DL on Tuesday, but the Yankees may look at Hanrahan as a depth option after having to tax the bullpen with Robertson out.

According to Hardball Talk, the Yankees and the Mets were two of the teams that went to see Hanrahan throw and he could be a free agent option down the line after he had Tommy John surgery and looked good in his workout. Hanrahan saved over 70 games with the Pirates before getting surgery and he could be a solid option for both teams after they dealt with injuries, including the Mets, who lost Bobby Parnell to Tommy John surgery.

"Sunday is definitely a possibility," Girardi said.
