The NY Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers are playing on the NHL playoffs schedule for Game 3 of their eastern conference first round series and the game is streaming from the NBC Sports Live Extra and will be starting up at 8 pm ET on CNBC and comes as New York looks to rebound at the Wells Fargo Center after losing the second game at MSG for a 1-1 series tie.
The Rangers have not won a game 2 at home in quite some time and now the Rangers have to hit the road to win against the Flyers and if they drop these two games, they would be down 3-1 heading home for the next matchup. The two teams are playing for the first time in the playoffs in over a decade and it comes after the Flyers won that one and now they are both looking to take a lead in the series.
The Flyers have had to deal with an injury to their top goaltender in Steve Mason and that has always seemingly been an issue with Philly over the years. The team has been using Ray Emery in his place and the backup has shown why he is considered one of the most respected veterans in the game, as he was brilliant down the stretch for Philly in game 2 and after allowing two early goals by the Rangers, he shut them out the rest of the way. Emery made some brilliant saves in the third period and he kept his team alive after they went down two and now the Flyers feel that they can at least match Henrik Lundqvist in performance if not talent in net.
Emery has past experience with championship teams and he previously played for the Chicago Blackhawks and he knows what it takes to win 16 games to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers have gone a long time without one and so have the Flyers and many Rangers fans are worried that they will not get into a finals with Lundqvist, who has been one of the best goalies in the NHL for a decade. Two seasons ago the team made it to the east finals against the Devils and lost and last season they fell to the Boston Bruins, who went on to the finals and lost to the Hawks.
Mason has not played in the playoffs yet and he came into the playoffs after helping the team pull out from a dreadful start to the season and he also won 33 games during the year. Mason suffered an upper body injury late in the season and that has left Emery in net, but he might be able to return for Game 4 and if the Flyers can take the game on Tuesday night, that would be huge for them. The Rangers came into the playoffs after being fourth in the league in goals against during the season and they also were ranked in the top five in the penalty kill and they will need that for Game 3 after allowing four goals straight without scoring one in Game 2 in New York.
