The Detroit Lions continue to downplay the ongoing contract negotiations with Ndamukong Suh even though things have clearly not gone as planned. The Lions are trying to get the defensive end signed to a deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. Suh expects to be paid like one of the top defensive players in the league, but he and Lions cannot agree on a number of value. As Suh remains absent from voluntary workouts, is his future in Detroit in jeopardy?
Offseason workouts are totally voluntary which is the excuse the Detroit Lions are riding to explain the absence of Suh. However, it is widely known that he and the Lions are trying to work out a contract extension and the three-time Pro Bowler is not happy with the terms being tossed around for how much he is worth. Matthew Stafford simply said he is not concerned. Head coach Jim Caldwell admits the he expected Suh to join the team, but he understands the defensive end is not happy right now.
"It certainly didn't blindside me," said Caldwell. "We knew. He and I probably have had more discussions than any other player we have on the team. He's been in and out (of the facility). He was actually around a couple of days when I came to visit. So we kind of knew exactly what was going on."
So what does all of this mean for the future of Suh? According to Scott Bischoff of New Era Scouting, sources are reporting the Lions have had internal discussions about attempting to trade Suh prior to the NFL Draft. The Lions have been eyeing several players including Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack and the top wide receivers. However, their current draft position does not help their chances of landing any of those options.
Suh is a big $22.4 million salary cap hit in 2014. Yes, he is one of the best defensive players in the league, but struggling contract extensions do not speak well with his standings in Detroit. Pair that with his discipline issues and disdain for strength and conditioning policies and the likelihood these reports of trade talks are true seem pretty great.
Several teams are looking for a pass rusher, but not everyone is ready to pay Suh his money. However, getting him for one year is not a bad option. The Houston Texans are looking to move down in the draft, but have no need for Suh when they have JJ Watt. The Jacksonville Jaguars might be an option, but they also need a quarterback so they could easily stay put. Detroit might have a hard time finding a partner that will move down in the draft and take on a $22.4 million cap hit in 2014. Suh might be better off waiting for free agency.
