In the 2013 NFL Draft, Ryan Nassib was considered pretty highly rated. Of the later-round options, the former Syracuse star had a strong college career and analysts believe he has the perfect build to succeed professionally. However, right now Nassib is sitting behind Eli Manning with little to no chance of seeing the field. To make matters worse, he is now competing for the No. 2 spot after recent roster additions. So what do the New York Giants do about the former fourth-round pick, trade him.
Nassib's future fell into question when the Giants signed Josh Freeman and then veteran quarterback Rusty Smith. At first New York played it like an insurance move. Manning recently had ankle surgery and will not be available for spring practice. Curtis Painter had knee surgery. The team needs quarterbacks to run drills. However, now general manager Jerry Reese is noting that there could be a chance Nassib is on the move as the team is "keeping their options open."
"We like Nassib, but he really hasn't had the chance to do a lot for us, and so we're going to take a real good look at him in the spring. We still think he's a really good player. He hasn't had the chance to play yet, but he's going to get a lot of work this spring, and obviously he'll get a lot of work in the preseason. Along with Curtis Painter and Josh Freeman there's competition. We keep all of our options open," Reese said, via NJ.com.
Nassib has value and could possibly help the Giants in the draft. Right now the team selects at No. 12. The Giants have be predicted to take everyone from a wide receiver to a linebacker in the this year's draft. Shopping Nassib with an additional pick could move the team well into the top 10. New York has worked out several top wide receivers leading up to the draft in hopes that they can replace Hakeem Nicks in the lineup. Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans are easily the best available, but will be gone by No. 12.
The Giants could call up several teams for a deal. The Oakland Raiders are an option. General manager Reggie McKenzie is open to deals. The team was going to grab a quarterback at some point and the option to move down, get a quarterback and another draft pick would be favorable. The Cleveland Browns could also be an option since the team has multiple first-round picks. The Jaguars could also be interested with the right price.
If Reese is serious about the possibility of a Nassib trade, He will get creative in what the team can get in return. A fourth-round pick does not warrant much, but throw in draft options and he could get himself a nice trade.
