Kyle Lowry is officially approaching free agency. The point guard has faced multiple trade rumors over the past two seasons, never seeming fully satisfied with the Toronto Raptors. However, Lowry became the focal point in the Raptors turnaround, helping lead the team to a Game 7 matchup in the first round of playoffs. A return of the point guard could make Toronto the Eastern Conference favorites in 2014, but will it happen?
According to Toronto Raptors beat writer Josh Lewenberg, the team is making re-signing Lowry a priority in the offseason. This is certainly a change of tune for Toronto. The point guard was extremely close to getting traded at the deadline as the Raptors considered dismantling the whole team for draft picks. However, a deal was not made and in return Lowry repaid Toronto by averaging 17.9 points and 7.4 assists while averaging 20 points in the postseason, carrying the team during the Brooklyn Nets series. Now Lowry's future is once again in question.
"It's a lot of things that could have been done differently, but this season has been a great season," Lowry said, via ESPN.com. "My teammates, I've had the best core group of teammates I've ever had in my life, in my career. It's just a lot. Mad, frustrated, but at the same time understanding that this is only a stepping stone for my growth."
When Lowry left the podium, he told reporters, "This is only the start for us and the Raptors organization." Is that a hint that he is hoping to return to Toronto in free agency? He is right about this only being the start for the Raptors. Armed with one of the youngest teams in the league, the Raptors could be up for big things if they keep most of the team together.
The Raptors have cap space to re-sign the point guard to a favorable deal. They are also likely looking to sign a big name thanks to the team's increased status in the league. Ultimately, Lowry's future will be determined by the market. The Raptors might have a leg up, but several teams could be interested in trying to get ahold of him.
The New York Knicks could be a likely landing spot. The team tried very hard to get Lowry at the deadline, but determined his price tag by the team was too high. Right now no one in New York has a guaranteed roster spot. Raymond Felton could easily be gone. Iman Shumpert who was the original trade piece for Lowry could also be gone. The point guard would have an immediate starting spot and if the team can also retain Carmelo Anthony, it might be a nice fit.
Other teams will emerge once they figure out their roster moves. If Rajon Rondo is out in Boston, Lowry would be wanted. The same can be said for down in Miami depending on what the Big 3 does in free agency. It is likely in Lowry's best interest to remain with the Raptors for a few more years. He can be the anchor point for the developing offense. Toronto is really just one player away from making an even bigger run in the Eastern Conference.
"Why would he leave?" DeMar DeRozan said. "Just my opinion. That's how I look at it."
