Geno Smith needs all the help he can get. After an inconsistent rookie season, the New York Jets quarterback is looking to improve and better lead the offense. With a veteran quarterback pushing for his starting spot, Smith cannot afford a drop off. The only way that is possible is if the Jets surround him with weapons, something they failed to do last season.
The Jets made a few moves in the offseason to help in the effort. The team signed Eric Decker to a big free agent contract. They brought in Chris Johnson to help stabilize the ground game. However, that will not be enough. The team has some players returning like Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill along with Jacoby ford, but Decker is clearly the best of the bunch and will be double-teamed every game. With that in mind, the Jets are ready to trade up for a top rookie.
The Jets make their first pick at No. 18. That is certainly a high enough to get a quality player, but the Jets want to move up. How high is the question. NFL.com is reporting that New York has several players in mind that they could take at No. 18, but would prefer to trade up for someone like Mike Evans. Plenty of teams are targeting the former Texas A&M star. Most of those teams are in the top 10 which could leave the Jets on the outside looking in. Sources report that the Jets are hesitant to give up picks for a big move so are working out plenty of other options just in case.
The New York Post is reporting that Odell Beckham Jr and Marqise Lee might be the favorites if the Jets stay put. New York drafts higher than the Dolphins, Eagles and 49ers who are also targeting both wide receivers so baring any moves, they should have their pick of the litter. Of the two, Beckham is considered the better pick. His height mixed with speed and aggressiveness would make him the perfect fit for the Jets offense.
New York will select a wide receiver in the first round who will be expected to start immediately. Having one more elite receiver will help with the ongoing quarterback battle as both Smith and Vick and better display their talents with a strong group than last season.
