No one is left in Mike Glennon's corner. Everyone that believed in him as a starting quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is gone and a new regime is in place that wants to bring in their own guy for the job. NFL scouts continue to hype Glennon as one of the better prospects of his draft class, but Tampa Bay is not listening. As a result, the quarterback is available for trading while the Buccaneers eye another top quarterback prospect.
The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that the Buccaneers are extremely serious about trading up for Johnny Manziel. It appears the Houston Texans are going to pass on him as the No. 1 overall pick and if they do, the Buccaneers are ready to make a deal. Lovie Smith does not have a lot of experience with a mobile quarterback, but with Josh McCown in place as the starter, the two would have time to get to know one another.
Smith already noted that McCown would enter the 2014 season as the starter and Glennon would have the opportunity to compete with the veteran. However, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Buccaneers have placed a second-round pick price tag on the quarterback for either this upcoming draft or next year's draft. So much for competing to start.
The chances Glennon gets traded in the next 24 hours could be pretty slim. But, any team that possibly misses out on the rookie of their choice could easily make a run at the backup quarterback who could really turn into something with a solid coaching staff in place. NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell says Glennon is more advanced than even Robert Griffin III and simply needs a franchise with some stability in place to begin to shine. So where does he land?
NFL.com predicts the Chicago Bears could really be an option. General manager Phil Emery recently noted that taking a late-round rookie quarterback does not interest him and he would rather bring in a quarterback with experience to backup Jay Cutler. After losing McCown in free agency, they need a quality back and head coach Marc Trestman could make Glennon elite.
Another option for a deal could be the Tennessee Titans. The team is not invested in Jake Locker after the quarterback suffered another injury. After denying his fifth-year option, bringing in Glennon would create an excellent competition for the starting job. The Arizona Cardinals could also look the way of a trade. The team is in the market for a quarterback considering the age of Carson Palmer. Getting Glennon and not wasting a first-round pick on Teddy Bridgewater might be the better option.
