Carmelo Anthony Rumors: Steve Kerr Signs With Warriors Over Knicks Makes Rockets, Chicago Bulls Free Agent Options?

May 14, 2014 11:03 AM EDT

Carmelo Anthony is front and center as the main priority for the NY Knicks and with the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls gunning for the New York star, Phil Jackson has some major decisions to make and Melo may not look to return to the Big Apple if a Tyson Chandler trade goes down and if the team can't lock in Steve Kerr, who is getting some renewed interest from the Golden State Warriors and now he has signed with the Warriors over the Knicks.

Anthony is one of the biggest names set to hit the free agent market this summer and the Knicks are going to try hard to keep him, but he is expected to have suitors in the Bulls, Rockets and Lakers for 2014. According to ESPN.com, Phil Jackson is looking to bring back Melo at the right price and he also is hoping to sway him back through the hiring of Steve Kerr as head coach and he would be replacing the fired Mike Woodson. But that situation is starting to get a bit dramatic for the Knicks, as they are zeroing in on him with a contract that had hoped to get done in early May.

Now that it has moved to mid-May, the Golden State Warriors, a team that reportedly was interested in Kerr and then wasn't, are interested again and the two sides met this week. Kerr is "in deep" negotiations with the Knicks and that could get a deal done, but according to ESPN.com, the Warriors met with Kerr before he did the game broadcast on TNT for the Thunder and Clippers and they are hoping to sway him to the west coast. Many have wondered what Kerr will do and he is the top coaching candidate on the market right now and the Knicks really want him to be their head coach. Kerr has relationships with the Warriors front office and this comes after Golden State went after Stan van Gundy, who signed with the Detroit Pistons.

Phil Jackson feels Kerr is the right coach for the job even though he has not been a head coach before and Jackson also thinks that Kerr will help keep Anthony in NYC. According to SI.com, the salary cap is rising into next year and that could allow the Bulls and Rockets to compete with the Knicks for Melo. The Knicks are coming off of a terrible year and Anthony missed the playoffs for the first time in his career and that has everyone uneasy in the Big Apple.

Anthony has a major decision to make, as the Rockets are looking to make a big 3 with James Harden and Dwight Howard, while the Bulls feel he could be the missing piece with Derrick Rose if he comes back healthy. Anthony led the Knicks in scoring last season with 27 points per game and he is their main focus as they head into the summer. Anthony can get the most money and years from the Knicks, but he is also looking for a good situation to win championships and he knows that the Knicks are at least two years away from doing that.
