The Houston Texans still could use a legit starting quarterback and the team may look at the Titans for a trade, as Jake Locker has not quite lived up to expectations and now that Zach Mettenberger has been drafted, the team could move him to someone like the Texans for a later round pick as they start to build for the future with a new head coach.
The Texans came into the draft with a number of big needs and quarterback was one of them and while they drafted Tom Savage in the fourth round from Pitt, many wonder if he will be the answer this season at QB. The team has Ryan Fitzpatrick and while he is a solid option and had an okay year for the Titans, he is not a long term solution and while the Texans will bring along and develop Savage, they are also looking at trades as possible options.
According to ESPN.com, the team is interested in Ryan Mallett for the right price from the Patriots and by that logic, the team could also be looking at someone like Jake Locker or Kirk Cousins. The team appears content to go with what they have heading into the summer, but the Texans have so many holes and with Andre Johnson frustrated about his situation, the team could turn to a trade instead. Locker did not have his fifth year option picked up and while that was an expected move, the team now has selected Mettenberger and that could signal the end of Locker having any chance at starting over the long term.
Locker was a top 10 pick in the draft out of Washington and while he showed some flashes over the past couple years, he has not lived up to expectations and he also has dealt with a number of injuries. 2013 was expected to be a big year for Locker, but he ended up getting injured and he played in only seven games and now he has played in just 23 over the past three seasons. A change of scenery could be beneficial for both sides and Locker comes in after passing for 1,256 yards and eight touchdowns last season and he has 22 TDs and 15 picks in his career.
Savage will need time to develop and to get better after he bounced around in his college career and while the Texans likely will not pull off this move, it's one that could be an option down the line depending on how things play out. Mettenberger has been doubted by many scouts before and he will use that as motivation with the Titans.
