Atlanta Falcons Rumors: Steven Jackson Praises Devonta Freeman, Jacquizz Rodgers Competition as Jermichael Finley, Dustin Keller Options After Julio Jones Injury

The Atlanta Falcons signed Steven Jackson last offseason with the hope that the veteran could lead their run game in 2013. With their passing game appearing better than ever, a star running back seemed like the final piece to the Falcons' championship puzzle. However, that failed to pan out as Jackson spent most of the season injured and is now looking to prove himself in 2014.

The Falcons finished last season ranked 32 in rushing offense. For those that might not realize it, that is last place. After letting go of Michael Turner and signing Jackson, Atlanta had higher expectations. Jackson put up a career-low 543 yards while Jacquizz Rodgers managed just 332 yard. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is stressing that those numbers simply cannot happen again and Jackson hears him loud and clear.

"We by no means want to be known for that and we don't intend to have another year like that," Jackson said, via the team website. "There's no reason to panic, it's not going to be three yards and a cloud of dust either. I think once all of our horses are back, we get the scheme going and guys adjust to (offensive line) coach (Mike) Tice's coaching style, I think we're going to be quite alright."

Jackson might have the contract of a starting running back, but he has some competition that could hurt his chances of keeping the top spot. While Jason Snelling is off to retirement, Rodgers is back while rookie Devonta Freeman is expected to impress. Approaching 31, Jackson's body simply is not what it used to be and now he has much younger legs to compete with. The veteran stresses that he has staying in top shape in the offseason and is mentally fresh, but that might not be enough to battle with Rodgers and Freeman.

"I love it. It feeds me," Jackson said. "I think we learn a lot from each other. It's an honest tradeoff. Those young guys learn from, you know, my experience over the years -- what I can help them on the field, what I can convey to them that a coach possibly may not be able to understand and see it through their eyes. At the same time, they bring that youthfulness. They bring that edge to me to make sure that I stay sharp and that I don't get complacent. It's a fair tradeoff. And our room, as a core, I think we all get along. I think we all work together well. And it's going to be great going into the season."

Jackson has had nothing but praise for Freeman has he enters his tenure with the Falcons, expected to be the future of the ground game. After a season that saw the team average just 77.9 rushing yards per game with 4 per carry, Atlanta needs production from every player on the roster whether they end up being the starter or not.
