The Oakland Raiders are coming into the season with high expectations after a rough 2013 season and an Andre Johnson trade with the Houston Texans is an option if he continues to stay away from team activities and the Raiders could look at trading backup quarterback Matt McGloin in a deal to reunite him with former coach Bill O'Brien if Derek Carr shows he can step up and be the backup for Matt Schaub after the team acquired him in the offseason.
The Raiders are shaping up to be a better team than 2013 after making a number of free agent signings and solid draft picks, but there are still some holes to work out heading into trading camp. According to ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated, the Raiders are one team that could fit for the Andre Johnson trade and while they are not actively looking to make a deal, it's something that could come up if the Texans wideout continues to stay away from team activities. The Raiders need a true number one wideout and they have the money but they may not want to give up draft picks for him.
The Texans are not necessarily looking to trade Johnson yet and ESPN.com reports that he has not demanded a trade, but that could come soon if he doesn't show up to training. ESPN.com writes that Johnson has not come to team workouts this offseason and plans on staying away from mandatory minicamp and since it's not a contract dispute, it could lead to a trade. Johnson has not demanded one, but he expressed frustration about playing for a new head coach and also how the team stepped back this past season after being a Super Bowl contender.
Johnson had a very tough year while playing for a 2-14 team and that included 14 straight losses. The team did not get great play from Matt Schaub and also used undrafted rookie Case Keenum and Johnson still had massive numbers with 109 receptions for 1,407 yards and five touchdowns. Johnson has been a durable and productive receiver his entire career and now that he is 32, he may want to go elsewhere. The Texans are coming into the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Keenum and rookie Tom Savage as the main options at QB and that is another reason why Johnson could be miffed.
The Raider could look at trading McGloin in a deal for Johnson, as the Texans showed some interest in Ryan Mallett after and during the draft this year with the Pats. The team could look at getting another QB after McGloin played last season and started six games and he could reunite with his old Penn State coach. That deal is a longshot, but the Texans may want another option at QB and that could happen later down the line, but is unlikely. What is likely though is a move with Jonson, as he may force the hand of the team if he continues to stay away from training camp.
