The new Pinehurst gave a number of players a hard time, including Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson ended up even and was hating on his putting heading into the clubhouse. Mickelson has finished in second six different times at the Open and he is paired with the winner from last year in Justin Rose and he struggled as well. Martin Kaymer was on top of his game and he pushed things to a three shot lead heading into Friday after going five under and he was strong on the finish, getting birdies down the stretch and throughout the day to take the early lead.

Kaymer was eight under and three under for the day through half of his holes and a number of players did not tee off yet, including Mickelson and he will be looking to get things going. The temperature is hot down south and the players are all dealing with the elements and the tough course. Kevin Na is in second place with a bunch of players at two under and that includes Graeme McDowell and Dustin Johnson and those players will be looking to cut things on Kaymer.

Tiger Woods is out of the tournament with an injury and Rory McIlroy will try and get things going, while young star Jordan Spieth is lurking in the top 10. Spieth had a chance to win the Masters this year and blew it and now he has the chance to put himself in contention at the US Open and that would be big for the up and coming player. The new look course gave players some fits and now they will be looking to rebound on Friday heading into the weekend.

There was a big group at 69 and many players had scores under 70 despite the tough conditions, although Watson was not one of them. Watson won the Masters and now he is looking to follow that up and this course could end up deciding who wins with the way it has been playing.
