Group D might not be the hardest pairing in the World Cup, but it has the most balanced teams as far as strengths are concerned facing one another. Uruguay, England, Italy and Costa Rica can all compete with one another on an even field which will make for some very interesting games during group play. Uruguay and Costa Rica kick things off as both are desperate for points before going up against two European heavy weight teams.

Uruguay comes into the match shorthanded. The biggest news for the match is the health of Luis Suarez. He underwent knee surgery in May and has been attempting a comeback for the World Cup. Manager Oscar Tabarez has been sending out mixed message's of his stars overall health. He is traveling with the team to the tournament and most expect he will play considering his history. If he misses the game, it will be a big blow considering he was PFA Player of the Year.

Uruguay got to Brazil after winning their two pre-World Cup friendlies which has given the team some confidence going forward. The team was once set up to work with the strengths of their three best players, Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. However, while all three players are back they are not the same threats as they once were. Uruguay will set up with two strikers and a back four, something Costa Rica thrives with.

Costa Rica is looking to prove they can pull off a few good upsets themselves as they enter the tournament having their two best defenders sick. Michael Umana and Junior Diaz are both ill, but they are expected to be available. The team has only won one game of their last five and need to come out strong before meeting up two top Euro teams.

A matchup with both England or Italy will not be easy. Costa Rica is aiming to get up early in group play before having to face off with either team. They have youth that will work towards their strengths. Uruguay was a darling in the last World Cup, shocking a few opponents. They remain confident the same can happen again this year.
