History is not in favor of the Miami Heat. The team is down 1-3 in the NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs and in the history of the playoffs, no team has ever completed a comeback to win the championship. The Miami Heat are hoping they can be the team that breaks history. It will not be easy. The team has struggled on both ends of the court this series and playing Game 5 on the road certainly will not help the uphill battle.
The Spurs are one game away from winning their fifth championship. They have the chance to do it in front of their home crowd. The team has been in command during this entire series. Not only are they winning, but they are winning big. They broke Miami's streak of always getting a win after a loss. They also broke their home game win streak. They won Game 3 and 4 by 40 points. They have trailed by more than just two points and have held leads as big as 25 points. If the Heat are going to beat them, it will not be easy.
San Antonio has seen their championship-clinching game slip away once before. Last season, they thought they would win the series in Game 6 until Ray Allen hit the three-point shot heard around the world and forced a Game 7. The Heat eventually won Game 7 and the NBA Championship. Of course being up 3-1 offers a small sense of security, but the Spurs are being smart and not getting ahead of themselves.
Miami has never been in this position before, trailing 1-3, since bringing on the Big Three. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are taking the attitude that they are capable of being the team that makes history. They have not played well at all this series. Their offense has struggled, Their defense has allowed the Spurs to put up shooting percentages like 57.1 in Game 4. With San Antonio unable to miss any shot they attempt, Miami is going to have a hard time getting into the records.
The Spurs are a team on a mission. With certain players headed for retirement, the urgency is there. They want revenge and they want to end on a high note before the roster undergoes changes. Getting the home crowd will certainly help as the Miami Heat aim to shock the NBA and comeback from a deficit that no team has ever done before.
