2' - First corner of the match goes to Portugal, but the kick sails across the box with little incident.
7' - Spain not getting a whole lot of room to work from Portugal. The Portuguese are really pressuring the ball out there and keeping it in Spain's half of the pitch.
9' - Arbeloa has the first really great chance for Spain, but his shot from the edge of the box sails just over the goal.
11' - The pace of the match is absolutely outstanding. Great ball pressure from both sides and a real sense of urgency. Both teams know they'll need to be at their best, making this a day when the "beautiful game" can really live up to its billing.
13' - Cristiano Ronaldo on a great run for Portugal, but his cross from the left side is seized by Iker Casillas before any real danger can present itself.
16' - Ronaldo brought down just outside the box on the left side, awarded a free kick.
17' - Ronaldo looks to curl a shot from the difficult angle, but it hits the wall and goes out for a throw-in.
20' - Spain looked to be setting up on the attack, but one errant pass effectively spelled the end of the chance.
24' - Wild turning shot from Ronaldo sails very high. Chances are hard to come by in this one, meaning that teams and players have to take what they can get.
26' - Pereira sent in from the right side, but it was cleared away with little incident.
27' - Ronaldo on another good run and sent a pass back, but he wasn't well supported, and Spain cleared it away. Portugal playing as well as anyone has against the Spaniards. Will it be well enough?
29' - Spain gets its best chance of the match, getting Portugal on the run defensively, but Iniesta's curling shot is just over the goal. Tantalizingly close for the reigning champions.
31' - Great pressure from Portugal to salvage a chance that seemed to be going for naught, but Ronaldo's low shot is just wide to the right.
36' - Nani down on the pitch for Portugal. He receives attention, but stays in the match,
38' - David Silva with a good run for Spain, but it seems like he could have done more with it than he did, sending a gentle roller ahead that was scooped up by Portuguese keeper Rui Patricio.
40' - Yellow card for Spain's Sergio Ramos for obstructing Cristiano Ronaldo. Good card, too, since Ronaldo could have been off to the races for Portugal otherwise.
43' - Nice long ball ahead from Portugal that just missed being a nice setup, but it rolls all the way back out for a goal kick to Spain.
45' + 1' - Just one minute of extra time added to a fast-paced first half. Probably a good thing, too, since after running around the way these guys have in the first half, they could probably stand to sit down sooner rather than later.
HALFTIME, PORTUGAL 0-0 SPAIN. Excellent fast-paced first half where Portugal looked like the slightly stronger side, or the side more on its game, at any rate. Still, nothing to show for it, setting the stage for more intense action in the second half.
46' - Action is back underway in Donetsk. No halftime substitutions for either side.
48' - Xabi Alonso looked to send a quick pass up to the front, but it was just off the mark. The teams seem to have a little more room to work with in the second half, as the frenetic pace of the first half has slowed down just a bit.
51' - Corner to Spain, no set piece though. Portugal gets the ball and comes back on the attack.
53' - Pereira wins a corner for Portugal. Moutinho's cross is too low, though.
54' - Substitution for Spain, as Cesc Fabregas replaces Alvaro Negredo.
57' - Corner for Portugal, but Nani's cross is nowhere near where it needs to be to give Portugal a really good chance. It comes all the way back to Patricio, who sends it ahead for a good 3 v 3 chance for Portugal. Almeida's shot is too high, though. Could have had better there.

60' - Sergio Busquets gets a yellow card for suggesting that Ronaldo should have been booked for a dive.
61' - Substitution for Spain brings in Jesus Navas, as David Silva sits down. Pepe gets a yellow card for Portugal after a foul on Alonso.
63' - Ronaldo looked to create a chance, keeping his feet nicely after a challenge.
64' - Yellow card for Pereira after taking down Fabregas away from the ball. Good card to take, though, since Fabregas would have had a great chance to score if he'd been left standing.
65' - Corner to Spain after a dangerous chance off the free kick.This time ,the cross is headed away, and Portugal continues to defend Spain well.
68' - Chances at both end, one great save by Patricio, and another wide shot from ALmeida at the other end.

73' - After a lot of checking and preparation, Ronaldo sends one just a bit too high. It's been a game of near misses for just about everyone.
73' - Pepe draws a foul on Fabregas, but probably demonstrates a bit excessively before getting up to take the free kick.
76' - Promising looking situation for Portugal ends up with Nani winning a corner. Goes for naught, however.
78' - General feeling seems to be that this is a disappointing game. The fact that this one is as close as it is only goes so far. Fabregas shot goes too high.
81' - Nelson Oliveira comes on for Portugal, replacing Almeida. Almeida had some chances, but just couldn't find the mark today.
82' - Navas gets a bit too fancy for Spain, allowing Portugal to head the other way, where Ronaldo earns a free kick after drawing a foul.

107' - Portugal gets back on the attack, but Coentrao's attempt to get it to Ronaldo goes for naught.
109' - Ronaldo catches a stud in the back on the way down, but he's up and walking it off as action continues.
110' - Fabregas has one deflected by Alves and pulled in by Patricio.
111' - GREAT SAVE by Patricio as Navas had a dangerous shot. Patricio's outstretched hand kept it out, and a defender helped him pull it in.
113' - Silvestre Varela on for Portugal, replacing Raul Meireles. On for penalty kicks, perhaps? Portugal seems to be favoring that route to victory, doing everything it can with a deliberate pace.

117' - Spain called offside. The flag has been very rare in this match. Spain starting to look like the team that's been so feared in this tournament, but it may be too late.

Pique: GOAL. Not a regular penalty shooter, but he puts it right past the outstretched arm of Patricio.
Nani: GOAL. Absolutely roofed it, left Casillas with nothing to do.
Sergio Ramos: GOAL. Lifted it right over the diving Patricio.
Bruno Alves: OFF THE WOODWORK! Right under the crossbar and out!
Cesc Fabregas: GOAL! Off the hands of Patricio, and Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't even get the chance to shoot! Spain on to the final, winning 4-2 on penalties. Not a pretty win for the Spaniards, but it gets them into the final against either Germany or Italy with a chance to repeat.
