The NHL draft 2014 is live on NBC Sports Network and the NHL Entry Draft has a live stream online from the NBCSN Sports Live Extra website for Round 1 on Friday night at 7 pm ET and Round 2 through Round 11 will be on Saturday starting up at 10 am ET at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and the Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers have the top three picks.
The draft this year does not have some of the superstar prospects like Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin or Steven Stamkos, but there are some very good players available and the Panthers have a plethora of options with the top overall pick. Many scouts around the league see this draft as a deep one and the top 10 players all could be long-term professional players for their teams. There is a chance that the Panthers will trade the pick, but that is unlikely this close to the draft and that goes for the NBA as well.
The NHL draft is a long slog for the first round and it does not have as much hype as the NBA, MLB or NFL draft, obviously not the latter, but it is very important for building teams and successful franchises. Last year names like Nathan MacKinnon, Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Drouin and Seth Jones were in the mix to go in the top picks and now Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Leon Draisaitl, Sam Bennett, Nikolaj Ehlers and Jared McCann all could be top 15 selections.
The Flyers have the most picks in this draft and after getting beaten by the Rangers in seven games in the playoffs, they could look at making moves to help get better prospects. ESPN.com writes that the team could trade Vinny Lecavalier, as that would help loosen up some cap space and moving forward that will be big, as the cap number is expected to rise this year for the league. Also, as if they need any more help, the Los Angeles Kings have nine picks in the draft this weekend and that is just an embarrassment of riches for a team that won the Cup.
The Rangers and Senators may look at making some smaller trades, as they have the fewest draft picks in the event coming in, while Ottawa could also pull off a big deal for Jason Spezza, which has been rumored about since the season ended. The Rangers had to give up picks in the deal for Martin St. Louis and while the team made it to the Stanley Cup finals, it turned one of the draft picks the team sent into a future first rounder and that made it multiple 1st round picks in the deal for Ryan Callahan. Most fans would say it was worth it because of the Stanley Cup, but it still hurts when it's multiple first rounders.
