Federer found himself in a hole as he was down by two sets at the beginning of the competition.

In the fifth set, the players once again traded points, but Federer ran away with the victory.

In other action, Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters advanced to the fourth round.

Angelique Kerber defeated American Christina McHale in two straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Somewhat proving ranks are relevant to competition was German Florian Meyer (29)  who escaped the third round with a victory over 136th ranked Jerzy Janowicz.

This draw, similar to Federer's went down to the wire as it took five sets to decide the winner. The scores were 7-6, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
