London Olympics: Yohan Blake Stuns Usain Bolt in 100M Olympic Trials

Jun 30, 2012 01:50 AM EDT

World's fastest man Usain Bolt suffered a shock upset when he was beaten by Yohan Blake in the 100 metre final at the Jamaican Olympic trials.

Blake set a season's best time of 9.75 seconds with Bolt finishing in second in 9.86 seconds. Former world record holder Asafa Powell took third in 9.88. All three of the athletes qualified for the London Olympics with Michael Frater, who finished fourth, joining the three in the 4x100 relay team.

The 9.75 time also make Blake the fourth fastest man ever, behind Bolt's 9.58, Tyson Gay's 9.69 and Powell's 9.72.

The Olympic 100M is set up to be a great race with the likes of Bolt, Blake and Powell along with the Americans Gay and Justin Gatlin all looking like serious contenders. If Bolt is to defend his 100 metre, title though, he will have to keep a close eye on his training partner Blake, who looks like he is getting better and better with every race.

Blake is also a threat to Bolt in the 200M, with the Jamaican running one of the best time's ever recently.

"Nine-point-seven-five, it's awesome," Blake said after the race.

"I won the world championship, so I've got that. Now, I'm the national champion for Jamaica, so I've got that.

"And now, I go into the Olympics like this."

Bolt, who struggled to get his start right throughout the trials, again began slowly and admitted he had starting problems. "I had to ignore it. I had trouble getting out, but I kept feeling like I could not give up."

In the corresponding women's final Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce won the 100 metres in a Jamaican record time of 10.70 seconds. Veronica Campbell-Brown finished second in 10.82 with Kerron Stewart third.
