LeBron James is hitting free agency and the Cleveland Cavaliers think they have an opening to convince him to sign and this comes as teams like the Houston Rockets, NY Knicks, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls are trying to snag him as a free agent and this could be one of the first dominoes to fall along with what Carmelo Anthony does this summer and the Cavs are convinced they are in the mix to sign back their hometown hero.
James is the top name on the free agent market along with Carmelo Anthony and while everyone expects him to stay with the Miami Heat, the longer this process goes on the more questions will arise. According to ESPN.com, the Cavaliers feel that they have a realistic chance to sign James this offseason and that comes after Dan Gilbert's horrible letter four years ago and after the team signed Kyrie Irving to a max contract. Reports say that the Cavaliers believe that James is open to listening to the free agent pitch from the team and that it is within the realm of possibility that he returns home to Cleveland.
James made a big move four years ago to sign with the Miami Heat and now he could be looking at the Cavaliers as a realistic option after teams like the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns also showed interest in signing him. James is considering his options and while Miami is the top target for him to return, the Cavaliers are going hard at their chance, as this could be the last time the team has the option to even speak with LeBron in these terms. Dan Gilbert needs to make some amends, as he took LeBron leaving like a baby and that could be one issue for the team in signing him back and if it ends up as THE reason, all Cleveland fans should hate Gilbert.
Had Gilbert not went crazy after James left and things were normal between the two sides, there could be a very realistic shot that James come back. While reports say he is listening to the Cavs pitch, it still is a very small possibility that he signs back there. The team brought in Kyrie Irving on a max deal after trade rumors came up last year, while Andrew Wiggins is in as the top draft pick and the team also has three first round picks to build with in the future. The Cavaliers also could try and jump back into the Kevin Love trade talks, but that may end up costing the team too much money and could keep them from signing James.
James has made it clear that he wants a max deal and going back to the Heat remains a major option as long as the team signs some free agents. Miami is looking at Luol Deng as well as Greg Monroe and Shawn Marion as names to pair with James, while Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are also likely to return. The Houston Rockets are going after Chris Bosh hard and if they miss out on Carmelo Anthony, they could convince him to sign there.
