The NY Yankees and Cleveland Indians are playing live on the MLB schedule on Wednesday night and the game is live from Progressive Field at 7:05 pm ET and has Brandon McCarthy making his debut for the Yanks after Masahiro Tanaka was roughed up and now he heads to New York after dealing with some pain in his arm to get checked out.
The Yankees now have yet another injury to their rotation in Tanaka, who is now on the DL and will be out for a little while leading into the All-Star break as they check out the damage. The news was first reported by the NY Post and now the Yankees are even more depleted in the rotation after already losing CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda to injuries. Tanaka has been one of the best pitchers in baseball and this paves the way for Felix Hernandez to start the All-Star game and he deserved it anyway.
The Yankees got the loss on Tuesday and it was only the fourth for Tanaka this year and clearly the reason he was off was due to the elbow and now the team may have to find another way to get to the playoffs this year. One reason the Yankees even are competing this year is because of signing Tanaka, as he has been by far the most consistent player for the team on offense and defense. The Yanks now may have to look to the trade market and they at least have Brandon McCarthy, who will be making his Yankee debut in this game and they are hoping he is better here than he was in Arizona. The Yankees have not been a consistent hitting team this season and they need to find a way to generate some offense to stay in the division hunt and the wild card race.
The AL East looks to be a three team race and now it likely will be a two team race with Tanaka injured, as the Baltimore Orioles are in first place and the Toronto Blue Jays are second. The Yankees have a long road trip heading into the all-star break and they play against the Baltimore Orioles next and that is a massive series, as they are currently leading the division. The O's have been very strong on offense and have three players in the All-Star game in Nelson Cruz, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters, although Wieters is out with an injury.
Derek Jeter will obviously be starting after getting voted in because he is Jeter, while Edwin Encarnacion will be out and Kyle Seager has been named to the team. The Indians are right around .500 and the Yankees are just one game over and now they will have to somehow patch together a rotation to get things done this season.
