The Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders are playing in the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup on Wednesday night and the MLS teams matchup from Starfire Sports Complex in Washington and the match comes at 10:30 pm ET in tournament play and these two sides have played against each other in the competition in the past with Seattle holding the advantage.
The Sounders come in as the hotter team and these two have matched up already this season, playing in Portland in April in a 4-4 draw that was very exciting and they will actually play again on Sunday in the game of the week, this time in Seattle. The Sounders are the top team in the MLS this year and now they are into the quarters here of the Cup and this will be a tough matchup for the team, as they have gone undefeated at home in US Open play and that will be on the line. Starfire always gives the team a great crowd and they will need it on Wednesday night.
The game on Sunday will be on ESPN2 and this matchup comes after the Sounders advanced against the San Jose Earthquakes in the fifth round of the tournament and that went into penalty kicks. Seattle played PSA Elite before that and Portland comes in after wins over Orlando City and Sporting Kansas City and that was another good game. The teams have played four times here and Seattle has won three of them, including in 2009 and 2010 and now they will matchup two times within days. DeAndre Yedlin has been dealing with rumors about a move to Europe, but he said he is only thinking about Seattle right now and that is what he wants to focus on.
The Sounders have a solid lead over Real Salt Lake in the western conference and DC United is first in the east this season. The World Cup is winding down and most players are back with their clubs as the second half schedule picks up. Seattle is leading with 35 points and they are up over RSL and Colorado with Dallas and Vancouver in playoff position, while the New England Revolution is third over the Red Bulls and Toronto FC in the east.
With the teams playing again on Sunday, there is a chance the lineups will not be as heavy here and this Cascadia Cup rivalry comes in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The teams know each other well and they matched up last year too and now they have the chance to get a win or at least a good performance heading into the next round.
