While most of the trade attention shifts to Kevin Love and Rajon Rondo this offseason, there is another player that could become available for the right price. The Minnesota Timberwolves have confirmed that they have been flooded with calls regarding the availability of Ricky Rubio for next season. The point guard comes slightly cheaper than others but with an equal talent level and could easily help turn a franchise into a leading contender if dealt.
Rubio is set to be a restricted free agent come next offseason. ESPN's Darren Wolfson is reporting that Rubio is seeking a max contract in his next deal to tune of at least five years. Rubio has never been overly impressive in the stats department as his numbers do not scream max contract player. However, the Timberwolves have never been great while he has been on the roster, likely contributing to his numbers. However, if Minnesota knows they will not meet Rubio's demands in the future, a trade now might be the best option.
The future of Love could easily play into Rubio's next contract. If Love is gone, that means Rubio could get the max contract he is desiring. The Timberwolves need one of the two players to stay and Love is able to get out faster than the point guard. With the forward gone, Rubio becomes the closest thing Minnesota has to a team identity and the best chance at rebuilding a roster.
However, several teams will come calling should Rubio be available. The Houston Rockets immediately become contenders. The team is seeking a trade for Rajon Rondo which may or may not be possible considering the Boston Celtics stand a better chance at getting Love with the point guard on the roster. The Rockets could easily zone in on Rubio instead as an upgrade to the point guard position.
The Dallas Mavericks could also be contenders for the point guard. They traded away Jose Calderon in favor of getting Tyson Chandler. That leaves the team without a true point guard on the roster. They have Raymond Felton, but he is nowhere near the talent of Rubio. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Mavericks could be in play for one more big name and Rubio would certainly be that.
The Timberwolves have made no commitment to trading the point guard, but Love's departure will open the door for anything. They could go for a complete overhaul of the roster or retain players for rebuilding. Like with anything in the NBA, anyone is available at the right price.
