The NY Yankees are still in the playoff hunt this season and at the trade deadline, a deal for a pitcher is a priority and names like David Price, Cliff Lee, Ian Kennedy, Wade Miley, Jorge De La Rosa and Bartolo Colon to help deal with Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia's injuries and they could be options and this comes as Troy Tulowitzki would be the dream target to replace Derek Jeter, but the Rockies appear not willing to trade their star shortstop this year.
According to ESPN.com and the NY Post, the Yankees are looking for offense and pitching at the deadline and GM Brian Cashman said that the team is looking to stay active. Kennedy and Cliff Lee have been mentioned as targets, but Lee is going to cost a ton of money and the Yanks may not want to deal a prospect to take on a $20 million contract again. Price is going to have a high price as well no pun intended, as the A's had to give up their best prospect for Jeff Samardzija and he is not David Price, who has won a Cy Young in his career.
Trading for Price likely will take the top prospect in an organizations system and that means the Yankees likely have no chance. The team has Gary Sanchez and some other players, but they are basically barren and after the Rays held out for Wil Myers in the James Shields trade, they aren't giving Price up for anything less. The team has leverage, as they have control of Price into next season as well and they could wait to see if they make a run here at the wild card or trade him in the offseason.
The Seattle Mariners were mentioned as a potential option, but Price said he doesn't want to sign long term there. The Angels and the Orioles also could be options, while the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians also could be in the mix for Price.
The MLB trade deadline is not for weeks and the Oakland Athletics already pulled the biggest deal of the summer by acquiring Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel and the Yankees also pulled off a deal for Brandon McCarthy and now names like David Price, Cliff Lee, Matt Kemp, Ian Kennedy, Wade Miley, Jorge De La Rosa and Andre Ethier could be targets for teams in the hunt down the stretch. The Yankees need more support, as they have a ton of injuries and any chance at making the playoffs in the final season for Derek Jeter requires a deal.
The Athletics have decided to go all in on this season, as Billy Beane gave up the top two prospects in the Oakland organization to get the deal done. The Yankees come into things five back in the division and 3.5 back in the wild card starting the second half of the season and that means they need to start playing better ball. The team has been terrible and anemic on offense and if they don't generate more runs, it will be a long second half. Jeter wants to make the playoffs and this would be the first time since the early 90s that the Yankees haven't made the playoffs in two straight years if they don't.
