Klay Thompson is considered one of the best young players in the NBA. Because of that, the Golden State Warriors shooting guard has heard his name tossed around in more trade stories than he or his teammates might like. The Warriors continue to attempt a trade for Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves are only willing to pull the deal off if Thompson is included. Players like Andre Iguodala would prefer that request be denied.
According to Iguodala, Thompson is the best shooting guard in the league. Some may give that title to Carmelo Anthony, but Iguodala is confident that Thompson deserves it and remains hopeful that his teammate remains with the Warriors over getting trade to the Timberwolves. Iguodala spoke out on Sirius XM Radio noting that a trade of Thompson should be out of the question.
"That's not going to happen," Iguodala said. "I want to clear that up right now. We should not trade Klay Thompson. "I tell Klay this every day. I text Klay and say, 'Don't worry. I'm your man. I'm going to make sure you get paid. I'm going to get you the max (contract). You'll be taken care of. Don't stress.' Klay really loves it in the Bay, and this is his first time going through trade rumors, and I've been through it many times, especially being in Philly. But Klay is my main man. I love Klay to death. One of my favorite people in the world even though he doesn't speak. But we're going to get Klay paid this year. He's going to be a Warrior for life."
Right now, Golden State is hoping to not include Thompson in a trade for Love, instead searching for a third team to get involved in making a deal. Minnesota is set on getting the shooting guard if they fail to secure help in trade talks. Golden State attempted to present a deal that included David Lee and Harrison Barnes, but it was denied leaving Thompson the only option.
Golden State understands how valuable Thompson is to the team, but they might not have the finances to keep him around. According to FOX Sports, Thompson plans on demanding a max contract in the coming year. If Golden State were to land Love, a max deal for Thompson is financially out of the question. The team would have to let go of someone like Iguodala or Andrew Bogut to make things work. That is not an option. If Golden State feels they can land Love, a trade for Thompson might have to happen regardless.
