According to sources, Toronto Raptors have reached a verbal agreement with New York Knicks guard, Landry Fields, for a $20 million offer.
The offer is for a three-year contract that Fields cannot sign until July 11, the first day NBA players can sign new contracts. This also gives the Knicks an opportunity to decide whether to match the offer to Fields should they choose to.
This Raptor and Fields' agreement is more than likely to be the nail in the coffin for any hope the Knicks had to lure superstar free-agent point guard Steve Nash, who is also trying to be lured to play for the Raptors.
Fields, who was drafted by the Knicks in the second round of the 2010 draft, has been a strong role player for the Knicks in his two seasons, averaging nine points and five rebounds.
His game began to falter, after the trade that made Carmelo Anthony a Knick, trying to find a role that was best suitable for him. He became a huge fan favorite his second year however because he continued to show promise. In 2011 Fields was named to the All-Rookie first team, and last season was selected to play in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend.
With so many found memories with the Knicks and their fan base, Fields signing will probably come as a bit of a surprise to many. The future homecoming for Fields to the Garden will be an interesting one for anyone in attendance or just willing to pay attention, but for Fields he'll know how it feels to be Reggie Miller for a day.
