The Dallas Cowboys are coming into the 2014 season with high expectations and Tony Romo has a lot of that on his shoulders and the quarterback may miss the first preseason game for the Cowboys against the San Diego Chargers on August 7, as he is coming back from surgery in the offseason and this comes as owner Jerry Jones has inked tackle Tyron Smith to an eight year extension worth over $100 million.
According to ESPN.com, Romo said this week that he was not sure if he would play in the first preseason game against the Chargers in a couple weeks, saying that the decision will be made once it gets closer. Last year Romo did not play in the first exhibition game for the Cowboys in the Hall of fame game and that followed offseason surgery as well. Romo played in the next preseason game and he could follow that same path again this season.
Romo is coming into the season with high expectations once again and he is coming off of a year when he put up some very gaudy numbers, but he was injured and missed the final game that the Cowboys lost to the Eagles to miss the playoffs. In other Cowboys news, the team signed Tyron Smith to an eight year extension this week and that makes his deal last through 2023 and could be worth over $110 million by the end.
The contract has a $10 million signing bonus and also has $40 million guaranteed money and that makes him and offensive tackle the team is building around. Smith was drafted back in 2011 and he is still just 23 years old and is coming off of an All-Pro season. Smith had some family issues and financial problems a year ago and now he has signed a massive deal, so he better watch out, but that is some major money for the Cowboys to shell out for that period of time. Smith is now tied to the deal and the team and it means he likely will remain a Dallas Cowboy player for a very long time.
The Cowboys now have Smith along with Zack Martin and Travis Frederick to build with and that gives them three young guys on the offensive line for the next stretch of years. That continuity should help Tony Romo and the rushing game and that could open things up in the offense.
