Andre Villas-Boas' return to the Premier League was confirmed by Tottenham, where the former Chelsea manager said he hoped to bring success as he looks to complete the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen and convince Luka Modric to stay.
Villas-Boas enjoyed unprecedented success in his first season with FC Porto, leading them to four titles, including the Europa League, prompting Roman Abramovich to bring the34-year-old to Stamford Bridge.
However his time at Chelsea was marred by player unrest and poor results, resulting in his sacking at the turn of this year. Villas-Boas was linked with the vacant Liverpool manager's position before Brendan Rodgers took charge and will now look to take Spurs back to the elite competition in Europe after narrowly missing out last season, with chairman Daniel Levy preparing a huge transfer budget for the upcoming season.
"Tottenham Hotspur is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world," Villas-Boas told the club's official website.
"I feel privileged to be its coach. For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League.
"I have had several discussions with the chairman and the Board and I share their vision for the future progress of the club.
"This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."
Chairman Daniel Levy controversially let go of the popular Harry Redknapp, and will now hope Villas-Boas can prove him right with Levy providing Villa-Boas with a reported £50-70 million ($78.5-110 million) transfer war chest. "I am delighted that Andre has agreed to become our new head coach," he said.
"He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style.
"Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of developing players and nurturing young talent, and he will be able to do so now at a new world class training center.
"We are constantly looking to move the club forward.
"It is important that we now look to develop the potential within the squads at all levels, whilst strengthening the first team in the summer in key positions with players who will become part of the future success of the club."
Villas-Boas will be joined by first team fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa, head of opposition scouting.
It is understood Sigurdsson is expected to complete his transfer to White Hart Lane within the next 24 hours while Villas-Boas hopes to conclude a deal for Vertonghen as soon as possible.
He will also look to persuade Modric to stay with Spurs, with the Croatian international looking to move on to play in the Champions League. Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid have been heavily linked with the playmaker.
