Novak Djokovic defeated the German, Florian Mayer in three straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the Semifinals.
This match was the more exciting of the two that took place in the early session. Roger Federer pummeled his opponent Mikhail Youzhny.
At the beginning of the first set, Djokovic trailed 3-2. Mayer's serves and defense were almost impeccable.
Mayer's goal was to make Djokovic uncomfortable and this he did by jumping after balls and attacking with his unorthodox forehand serve.
What saved Djokovic in the first set was his backhand, which was really precise throughout the first set.
Towards the end of the first games, the players were caught in a couple of deuces, which Djokovic came back to win.
Djokovic calmed down and simply overpowered the German in the second set. He was able to adjust to Mayer's style of play and showed why he is the No. 1 ranked player.
Both players had multiple highlights in the game, especially Mayer, who he hustled and competed. He dove and jumped after balls that looked impossible to reach.
Mayer lead in the third set 4-3, but, unfortunately for him, Djokovic was relentless in the last set and took a lead 5-4. There were three deuces in the final game and Djokovic put it away in the final match point with an ace.
He awaits his opponent in the Semifinals. He will face either Philip Kohlschreiber (30) or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5).
Tsonga and Kohlschreiber will now take Court No. 1 since this match is done.
