The Buffalo Bills are dealing with trade rumors around CJ Spiller this summer and teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, NY Giants, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints could be interested in a deal and this comes as Fred Jackson was extended for one year and after the team traded for Bryce Brown and now those players could challenge to be the starters this season.
The Bills love what Spiller brings to the table, but they are not looking to spend a ton of money on the running back position and now they have some insurance with Jackson and Brown locked in. The team traded for Brown this offseason from the Eagles and the team gave up a draft pick for him and now Spiller is coming into the final year of his deal. According to NFL.com, Spiller is not thinking about the trade rumors right now and he said that he is concentrating on football.
While trading a player with the skills and speed of Spiller may seem like a bad idea, the Bills have been hinting that they are moving in that direction for some time. On top of the fact that Spiller did not get an extension, the team looked at trading up in the draft to get Carlos Hyde and NFL.com also reported that the Eagles and Bills spoke about a trade for Spiller before Philly traded with the Saints for Darren Sproles. Spiller has great speed and he also can catch the ball out of the backfield and any team looking for that type of talent could go after him. The Cowboys may need more depth with the way DeMarco Murray always seems to get injured, while the Eagles could just add to their stable of backs, but that's unlikely.
The Seahawks may take a flyer on him as a way to avoid paying Marshawn Lynch in the future and since Lynch is getting up there in age, it could be a solid idea. Spiller has put up some great numbers in recent years after getting off to a slow start in his career, as he had his first 1K season in 2012 with 1,244 yards and six touchdowns and he also added a career high 43 catches that season for nearly 500 yards.
Spiller has also been great during a long stretch of games between 2011 and 2012, going for 13 touchdowns and 1,690 yards on the ground in 22 games and according to NFL.com he put up a near 6.0 yards per carry during that time. Spiller is valuable as a receiver out of the backfield and he also has shown that he can stay healthy, as he has missed just three games in his four years with the Bills.
Trading Brown was a signal that the Bills want to prepare for the idea of losing Spiller, as they have up a fourth round pick that could turn into a third round pick, meaning they did not trade for him just to keep him on the sidelines. Last year Brown rushed 75 times for 314 yards with two touchdowns and he could get even more carries this season. Jackson, Spiller and Brown is a great trio even if they eventually trade the back and he is a name to watch this summer.
