Carmelo Anthony has high hopes for the New York Knicks. The team might have been limited in what they could add to the roster this offseason, but he has not lost faith. With Phil Jackson and Derrick Fisher leading the way, Anthony predicts a postseason return for New York. However, that will be easier said than done with the now extremely competitive Eastern Conference. Several teams made big upgrades this offseason and will give the Knicks a run for their money. Could New York be in store for one more upgrade?
Jackson has noted that he is not spending any more money this offseason to improve the roster. However, he continues to seek out trades with the few assets the Knicks' have. According to ESPN.com, the Knicks intend on making a big run in free agency next summer which could include the likes of Marc Gasol. Currently reaching the end of his contract, Gasol will be a high-profiled free agent. However, could he be traded before that?
Most predict that Gasol will hit free agency next summer and be a priority for most teams. Kevin Love will reportedly re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers while LaMarcus Aldridge is expected to stay in Portland. That leaves Gasol, who was the main reason the Memphis Grizzlies took a step back this past season after an injury kept him off the court. If the Grizzlies continue to struggle, Gasol will walk. According to Chuck Myron of BasketballInsiders.com, the Grizzlies are aware that Gasol will hit the market, but they have no intentions of trading him because of that. Memphis will not take the route of the Timberwolves and trade their biggest star because they do not plan on sticking around.
If the Knicks are getting Gasol, they will have to compete with everyone next summer. It is unlikely a trade package that consists of Iman Shumpert, JR Smith or Amar'e Stoudemire will be enough to win Memphis over. All three of those stars including Andrea Bargnani have been shopped for the better part of the offseason and not a single team has taken a serious glance at them. It is likely the Knicks' roster will remain as is and Anthony believes it is one ready to compete.
