Houston Texans Rumors: Kirk Cousins, Christian Ponder Traded After Case Keenum, Tom Savage Struggle as Ryan Fitzpatrick Backup? Bill O'Brien Downplays Issue

The Houston Texans continue to find themselves answering questions about their quarterback situation. Through two preseason games, Ryan Fitzpatrick has done little to place confidence in the fans and Tom Savage and Case Keenum are battling to be  a backup. After dealing with the ups and downs of Matt Schaub last season, Fitzpatrick was brought on to stabilize the offense. While the veteran has been named the Week 1 starter for the 2014 season, could the team be interested in making a trade to help the backup situation?

Head coach Bill O'Brien is stressing that Fitzpatrick will do just fine as the Texans' starting quarterback this season. He struggled in the team's first preseason game, throwing two interceptions against the Arizona Cardinals. He did manage to look better against the Atlanta Falcons, getting the team a touchdown. However, behind him there are some questions. Both Keenum and Savage have left a lot to be desired this preseason.

Savage's firs taste of the NFL has seen its ups and downs. The rookie has not turned the ball over which is a positive, but he put up a total of 22 yards and two sacks through two games. He was given more playing time against the Atlanta Falcons and failed to do anything with the opportunity. Keenum has not done much either. According to O'Brien, the backup job is up for grabs at the moment.

"I felt like (Keenum) moved the team, and that was good to see, and then Tom is still a little bit behind Case," O'Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. "Tom has just got to keep working at it. But I think that both guys, they're fun to coach."

The Texans need as much talent at the quarterback position that they can get. So far, none of the options are instilling confidence. Fansided.com suggests that the Texans could be interested in a trade for a backup quarterback to help with talent depth on the roster. While unlikely, there are a few options the team could make.

Christian Ponder is currently requesting a move from the Minnesota Vikings. The former first-round draft pick might be the upgrade the Texans need at the backup spot. He has been linked to the San Francisco 49ers as Blaine Gabbert continues to struggle in the role. Ponder would likely be worth just a late-round draft pick if the Texans get desperate for someone. Mark Sanchez is also available. Chip Kelly told media that he would certainly answer the phone if someone called with interest. Again, a move is unlikely, but it is clear O'Brien is not thrilled with the quarterback play up to this point and if improvement does not come, the Texans will explore options.
