The Cleveland Cavaliers are still not satisfied with their roster. The team easily won the offseason after they signed Kyrie Irving to a max contract, signed LeBron James in free agency and traded for Kevin Love a few weeks later. After several key veterans to the lineup as well, Cleveland looks to be about set to break their playoff drought. However, Dan Gilbert and company are not looking to rest just yet. As the team considers trading for at least one more player, is the reward worth the cost?
The Cavaliers have been looking to add either one more big man to the roster or a backup at the point guard position to play off of Kyrie Irving. The team has been linked to multiple players by either free agency or trades. They have had discussions with Chauncey Billups and Ramon Sessions. They have also been linked to trades for players like Hasheem Thabeet and free agents like Emeka Okafor and Greg Oden. However, a few of thosep layers would require the Cavaliers to give up someone and it might not be worth it.
According to Steve Kyler of BasketballInsiders.com, the Cavaliers will not seek out any more players if it requires them to give up someone like Dion Waiters or Tristan Thompson. Yes, both players have seen their names tossed around in trade rumors for the better part of a year, but Cleveland is committed to keeping both. Waiters is expected to start this season especially with the trade of Andrew Wiggins. Thompson is a different story though has he is headed for the bench behind James and Love.
Many expect Thompson to be traded at some point this season, but not if it is for just a one-dimensional player. The forward is approaching restricted free agency and with both Love and James taking up spots on the court, there is no room for the veteran. However, the Cavaliers have no intentions to overpay for him as well. If the right deal comes along, Cleveland takes it.
The Cavaliers have high expectations this upcoming season. They spent a lot of money to get better and will have to spend even more next offseason in order to retain the talent. Sure they could use another big or strong point guard, but they simply cannot have it all. Giving up one of their two key assets is not worth it.
