CJ Spiller Trade Rumors: Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Browns Options For Buffalo Bills Deal Over Contract?

Aug 21, 2014 02:08 PM EDT

The Buffalo Bills and CJ Spiller have been dealing with trade rumors this summer and as the season gets closer, the team could be tempted to make a deal without coming to a contract extension agreement with the running back and teams like the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns or New York Giants could step up and do it, although that is unlikely this late in the preseason.

According to NFL.com, Spiller has come up in trade rumors this summer and while no deal is imminent, the Bills have had interest from at least four teams. Spiller said to reporters that he has heard the rumors but he is not letting them bother him and it comes as the Bills have made some moves to ensure that they have backups if Spiller does leave eventually. The team signed Fred Jackson to a one year extension and also traded for Bryce Brown and that gives the team some insurance if Spiller ends up getting moved.

Trades do not usually go down this late in the preseason, but the Bills may make a move if they feel they have a good enough return. The Raiders or Giants could look at a deal if they have issues with injuries, as they both have systems where a player like Spiller could thrive. Spiller could come in and take over for David Wilson, as he had to retire with a neck injury and it comes as he was expected to be the speed back among the RBs for the team in their new offense. Ben McAdoo likes to use screen passes in this offense and Spiller excels at that and he could be a nice fit, while the Raiders have some aging backs and injury prone backs in Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew.

Spiller and the Bills have not been able to come to a contract extension yet this summer and if the two sides can't agree during the season, he could get traded. Trent Richardson was moved last season and that was for a first round pick and Spiller could go for something like that as well if he gets moved. Spiller has explosive speed and while he did not have as good of a season in 2013 that he did in 2012, he was still very productive and could be a target for teams.

Spiller increased his rushing yards and touchdowns as well as his receptions in each of his first three seasons and that ended up with a career high 1,244 yards rushing in 2012. Spiller had six touchdowns and averaged six yards per carry in 2012 and he also added 43 catches for 459 yards. Spiller was one of the most productive players in football that season and he also has been very healthy in his career, missing just three games over his four year career. Spiller likely will not get moved, but if injuries and other issues come up, there is always a chance someone steps up to the plate.
