The NFL season is about to start and while trades don't usually happen late at this point in the preseason, names like CJ Spiller, Stephen Hill and Ryan Mallett have been mentioned in rumors and those players could be targets for various teams, with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and 49ers potentially looking at Spiller or Hill.
Spiller has been mentioned in trade rumors since earlier in the summer, with NFL.com reporting that teams have inquired about his contract status. According to Pro Football Talk, Spiller and the Bills have not been able to come to a contract agreement yet and he is not heading towards free agency. If the two sides don't agree on a deal, there is a chance that Spiller could get traded despite the fact that he is an electric player with breakout speed.
According to ESPN New York, the Jets could consider trading Stephen Hill before the season or during the season, as Rich Cimini writes that he has not played up to his potential in New York and that he has been an overall disappointment this summer. Cimini writes that the Jets would find some interest on the market for Hill, as there are not many free agent wide receiver options on the market right now with solid experience.
Hill was a second round pick and coming out of college it looked like he could be a dominating presence in the offense, but so far that has not happened. Many even compared him to Calvin Johnson because of the school connections and his size, but he only had 28 catches in his last season in college and now the Jets actually for once have a number of WRs on the roster they are not ditching with Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and David Nelson, which means Hill could be the odd man out as he battled with Clyde Gates.
Last season Hill had another disappointing season with just 24 catches and 342 yards, while in his career he has four touchdowns, 45 catches and 594 yards in two seasons with the Jets. Hill did not catch many balls in college and while he is a huge target, he has not been able to translate into an NFL wideout. Cimini writes that the Raiders could be an option, as they have been looking for more depth behind James Jones and Denarius Moore. The team has Rod Streater and Brice Butler and some other names and Hill could be an option for a draft pick.
Spiller is a dynamic player, but he is coming off of a down season after going over 1,000 yards the year before and there is a chance the Bills could look for a deal. The team wants to keep Spiller, but they signed Fred Jackson to an extension and also traded for Bryce Brown to give themselves some insurance in case a deal goes down. Spiller can catch balls out of the backfield and the Eagles were a team that also looked at Spiller before they traded for Darren Sproles.
