The Los Angeles Lakers introduced Jeremy Lin like he was their next big star for a reason. They are hoping he turns out to be just that. Right now, the Lakers roster leaves a lot to be desired, but the team is hopeful that they can shock some people and make a real run in 2014. That could start with Lin at the point guard position as Los Angeles is preparing to play him over Steve Nash.
According to Mike Trudell of NBA.com, the Lakers believe that Lin is the best option for the point guard position at the start of the season. He believes that while not every starting spot is locked down, Kobe Bryant, Nick Young, Julius Randle and Lin are likely to be part of the starting five. The Lakers like Lin's youth, injury history and athleticism over the uncertainty of what Nash might bring to the court.
Linsanity has certainly died down over the past two years, but the point guard remains very talented in the right situations. He played well for the Houston Rockets last season splitting time as both a starter and bench player. Given more playing time and Lin could really turn into a strong point guard in the league. Playing alongside Bryant will certainly help the effort.
The biggest question mark remains Nash and his ability to be productive this year. The point guard has barely been seen over the past two seasons, but his contract makes it tough for the Lakers to get rid of him. Los Angeles has had their eyes on players like Eric Bledsoe and Kyle Lowry, but lacked the salary cap space to take one of them on as Nash ate up space.
Lin will likely be the starter in 2014, but that does not guarantee him a contract in 2015. According to the Los Angeles Times, there is a growing belief that Lin is merely a one-year rental. His contract expires at the end of the season and the Lakers have bigger names on the brain for the future. Rajon Rondo, Ricky Rubio and Goran Dragic will all be available next season. Bledsoe could also be an option if he only signs a one-year qualifying offer with the Phoenix Suns. Lin will see the court a lot this year, but the Lakers appear to have other plans in mind for the future.
