The FIBA World Cup 2014 basketball tournament is into the knockout stages after group play finished up and the gold medal game is scheduled for Sunday, September 14 for the world championship final and the United States remains the favorites for the tourney as Spain, Australia, Turkey, Slovenia and Argentina are through and some of those teams could be dangerous in these rounds.

The tournament rounds coming up are the Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals and those games will be played in both Madrid and Barcelona. The United States plays against Mexico in the next round and that is in Barcelona, while the other games include the Dominican Republic against Slovenia, New Zealand against Lithuania, while Turkey and Australia also are in the round.

Australia caught some slack for what they did in losing to Angola, as they not will avoid a potential matchup with the United States in the quarterfinals, as they now would meet in the semis. The Madrid bracket of the tournament has Spain and they are the favorites as the host nation, while Brazil and Argentina are playing in that bracket and they are strong as well. The other teams in the bracket include France, Senegal, Croatia, Serbia and Greece. Team USA remains the favorites, but they are dealing with an injury to Kyrie Irving after he went down hard against Ukraine on Thursday.

The round of 16 is Saturday and Sunday before a rest day and the quarterfinals start next week ahead of the third place game and gold medal game the following Sunday.
