Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Beat Tottenham to Brazilian Youngster Oscar

Jul 10, 2012 01:40 AM EDT

Chelsea are all set to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing highly-rated Brazilian Oscar.

Oscar's agent, Carlos Meinberg Neto, has confirmed Chelsea have made an offer for the 20-year-old, and said an agreement between the clubs was imminent.

"Chelsea did offer 25 million euros (£19.8 million, $30.6 million), but there is still no agreement between the clubs, that will probably happen within the next few days," Neto told Terraa.

Neto admitted Oscar would most likely choose a move to Chelsea ahead of Tottenham.

"Giuliano Bertolucci (Oscar's main agent) will travel to England to finalise the remaining details," he said.

"Tottenham also made an offer, but he should accept Chelsea's offer as there is more exposure there."

Spurs, now coached by former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, were considered to be the frontrunners for the Brazilian playmaker's signature with the North London club reportedly tabling a bid over £15 million ($23.2 million).

However, Roman Abramovich has gotten one over his former employee, by agreeing a deal for the 20-year-old.

Oscar will join a sizeable Brazilian contingent at Chelsea with the likes of Ramires, David Luiz and Lucas Piazon already at Stamford Bridge. Another Brazilian, Hulk, has also been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

The Blues have already clinched the signings of Eden hazard and Marko Marin for a combined fee of £40 million ($62 million). Abramovich, who recently confirmed the permanent appointment of Roberto Di Mateo as manager, is desperate to convert Chelsea, from what is conceived by many as a boring team, to a squad that plays an exciting brand of soccer.

In order to do that, Abramovich has systematically gone onto buy players, preferably young, capable of playing that technical passing style and the signing of Oscar is sure to further enhance Chelsea's capabilities.

Oscar is considered as one of the brightest talents in Brazil, with Barcelona, particularly, linked heavily in the past for the creative midfielder.

The Brazilian - full name Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Junior -- is seen by many as the perfect No 10 in Brazil; at his best when playing in the hole behind the striker. However, the 20-year-old is also adept at playing in the wide areas and that is sure to help Di Matteo in rotating the squad ahead of a long campaign.

Juan Mata, Chelsea's player of the year last year is also a player in the same mould as Oscar, and if the signing is confirmed by the club, it will be interesting to see how the Italian coach manages to keep both players happy.
