The Buffalo Bills and CJ Spiller look content for the time being at 2-0 on the season, but if a trade end up going down, teams like the Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens or NY Giants all could be in the mix, as the Vikings and Ravens are dealing with the Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice situations, while the other two teams are 0-2 and struggling.
According to ESPN.com and Pro Football Talk, the Bills and Spiller are working on a contract extension this season, but after reports came up over the summer about a trade, there is a chance that still could go down. Spiller has shown his value to the Bills and he was electric on Sunday with a kick return for a touchdown. The team wants to keep him and now they have good vibes after the news about the franchise staying in Buffalo, but like everything else it comes down to money and there is chance that the two sides will not be able to agree on a deal.
Spiller is coming off of a down year compared to his 2012 performance and as he moves along in his career, he will be looking to get paid since RBs tend to start breaking down the older they get. This could be the first and only chance for Spiller to sign a major deal and if the Bills do not get up to the price he is looking for, there is a possibility a trade could happen. Spiller is a strong receiver out of the backfield and an explosive runner and that could make him a target for a number of teams.
The Baltimore Ravens appear to be content with using Justin Forsett and Bernard Pierce for the time being after the Ray Rice situation, but that could change in the coming weeks. The team won over the Steelers without Rice, but if the team falters down the schedule, there is a chance they will look at upgrading at the RB position. The team did not do much this offseason at RB because they obviously expected back Rice after two games, but clearly they did not expect the video to be released and the ensuing backlash to push Rice out of the league.
The Minnesota Vikings are also in a tough situation and while theirs is not the same as the Ravens, they may have to look at other options at RB. Peterson is one of the best backs in the NFL and he is dealing with child abuse charges and that could keep him out for an extended period of time. The team has Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon as the backups and while they may be solid short term solutions, the Vikings may have to make a major move.
According to Pro Football Talk, the team has not thought about releasing Peterson at this stage, but in the future a trade could happen. There have already been reports about potential trades and with the Dallas Cowboys so interested in Peterson, they could one day step up and make the deal. Spiller is a very explosive player and he finished this week with 69 yards on 12 carries along with a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that helped with the game for the Bills over the Dolphins.
