The Buffalo Bills may trade CJ Spiller this season if they can't come to a contract extension with the RB and teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, NY Giants, Oakland Raiders or Minnesota Vikings could be interested in making a move for various reasons and this comes as Spiller is in the final year of his contact and is set to hit the free agent market.
According to NFL.com, Spiller and the Bills have started talking again about a contract extension, but so far no agreement has come close to being reached by the two sides. Numbers have not come out, but Spiller has shown that he is an explosive player and he likely will be asking for a decent deal from the team. Spiller has developed into one of the most exciting backs in the NFL, but as Pro Football Talk has written multiple times, he is not the best fit for Doug Marrone and his offense.
Spiller had a fantastic season a couple years ago with 1244 yards and 43 catches for 459 yards, but that was under Chan Gailey and not Marrone. Spiller was excellent that season and so far this year he has been very solid with 122 yards and four catches for 20 yards. Last season his numbers decreased under Marrone, but he is looking for a big year now and he is coming off of a game with a 102-yard kick return for a TD.
The Bills have a major decision to make with Spiller, as they have started 2-0 this season and are looking good, but if they are going to lose Spiller as a free agent, their best move could be to trade him. Spiller has value as a solid return man and explosive running back and if the Bills look to trade him, there will be teams that are interested. The Vikings and Ravens are dealing with some unprecedented situations with Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice and they could look at making a move, while Oakland and Miami are both dealing with injuries.
The Cowboys are always in the mix because of crazy Jerry, but another reason is because of the AP situation and he was looked at as a target by Jones for a while. The story from earlier in the summer about a Peterson trade or interest in Peterson playing for the Cowboys in the future got a ton of coverage, but now that could be off the table after the abuse charges. Jones has some issues of his own and while it's unlikely since DeMarco Murray is playing well, the team could look at a deal with the Bills.
The Raiders have depth issues at runn9ng back and long term Spiller actually could be a smart option. The team has Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew as aging slash injury prone backs and with Latavius Murray not ready to take over yet, they could look at making a move or at least signing him later down the line. Spiller would be great in the offense for the Raiders since he can work how McFadden did a few years ago, but obviously on a much more consistent scale. McFadden has never played in more than 13 games in any season of his career and it remains to be seen if he will this year.
