The Brooklyn Nets and Deron Williams have reached an accord and they did not waste any time in doing so.
At 12:01 AM Wednesday morning, when free agent deals could finally get signed, Williams and the Nets inked in, or more like fingered in a deal on an iPad, that would ensure the point guard will play in Brooklyn for the next couple of years.
He signed a five-year $98 million deal, with a chance to opt out on the fourth. That averages to about $19.6 million a year for the 3-time All-Star.
Williams, who was a question mark as far as returning the the Nets at the end of the season, became a priority for the team.
They are in the hunt for Dwight Howard, but decided that getting Williams back would be a pivotal step in attracting high quality players.
Earlier in July, the Nets traded for Joe Johnson, a veteran shooting guard that should mesh well with the Brooklyn team.
Now with Deron back for good, the Nets have a pretty potent starting five.
Last season, Williams averaged 20.8 points and 8.7 assists. In his seven year career, Williams has averaged 9.2 assists per game.
It will be an exciting season in New York, as the Knicks are also working on signing their free agent point guard Jeremy Lin.
For now, the Nets will have a good weapon to counter Lin's attack. Deron Williams is unselfish, a great shooter from the perimeter and does a good job causing havoc in the paint when he decides to take it in.
