The NY Jets may have a quarterback dilemma soon if Geno Smith struggles in Week 5, as Michael Vick could end up with the next start for Rex Ryan and New York if he can't turn things around and this comes as the Jets are on a three game losing streak and after Smith was caught on camera cursing out a fan in frustration after the Week 4 loss to the Lions.
The Jets come into the game in Week 5 after losing their third straight matchup and Smith was one of the reasons why, as he turned the ball over again and that has been one of his biggest issues. According to ESPN.com, Rex Ryan has kept his support behind Smith and he will be starting the Week 5 game against the San Diego Chargers in what now could be a must win game for the Jets. The team had optimism after opening the season with a win, but now they have lost three straight and that includes the heartbreaker with the Packers after the blown timeout call.
The team signed Michael Vick to be the backup and mentor for Smith and as usual, the Jets made the move expecting that fans and others would not call for him to start. Just like with Tim Tebow. Smith has 922 passing yards this season with four touchdowns and five interceptions and his completion percentage is resting right at 60 percent. Vick may not be that much better than Smith, but as a veteran he may take care of the ball more and right now that is one of the biggest issues for the Jets.
Smith 3,968 yards with 16 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in his career and that turnover issue is what has dogged him the most as a starter. Smith has the job now, but there is a good chance that Vick will end up in the starting job if Smith struggles again. The Chargers are a good team and the Jets are still alive in the division since everyone is 2-2 above them, but if they lose in San Diego, the 1-4 hole could be very hard to dig out of.
Ryan has put his support and possibly his job behind Geno, as the team drafted him last year and decided he was their franchise guy. The Jets lost 24-17 to the Lions and after the game Smith was frustrated and cursed out a fan. While that is no reason to bench a QB, the team has to realize that the pressure is building and that could affect Smith's play moving forward.
A team in the division has a similar situation going on, as the Bills opted to bench their second year QB in EJ Manuel for Kyle Orton for the time being. The Jets are handling Smith with kids' gloves and while he needs time to learn and develop, the team also needs to win games and clearly Ryan thinks Smith gives them the best chance to win for now. The Jets are under the impression that benching their QB means they will kill his confidence and then they can't go back to him, but losing more games is never the answer either. Ryan may have a major decision to make soon.
