The Minnesota Vikings have Adrian Peterson on the exempt list and while a trade to the Dallas Cowboys has been rumored about in the future, the team may not need a top RB, as DeMarco Murray has been the MVP of the league so far and for fantasy owners in the 2014 season, as he is leading the league in rushing yards and has been stellar for Jerry Jones so far this year.
Peterson is currently away from the Vikings and on the exempt list while he is dealing with his legal situation and that has put his future in limbo. According to ESPN.com and NFL sources, the Vikings are not interested in keeping Peterson around in the future and while a trade is possible, so is his release. The team has Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon playing well for the time being and since he is getting older and is also getting paid a ton of Money, the Vikings could look at making a move.
The Dallas Cowboys have been mentioned numerous times as a trade option for Peterson, but much of that was from before his legal issues. Jerry Jones would love to have him down in Texas where he is from, but the team right now is NOT in need of a running back. If the season ended today, DeMarco Murray could end up being the MVP with the way he is playing. The way things are now, there's no way that the Cowboys would trade for Peterson at his age, since Murray is younger and playing at a very high level. The Cowboys could consider signing Peterson if he gets released, but obviously right now that is not on the table.
The interest between the two came out in an OTL report this summer, but again, that was before all the issues became public with Peterson. Murray is having a great year and he is on pace to shatter his career rushing total. Murray is on pace to go for 2,408 total yards and this season he already has 534 yards on the ground and that's just in four games. Murray also has five touchdowns this season and four 100 yard games and he is coming off of his best year in 2013.
Last season Murray played in the most games of his career and hit career highs across the board in rushing, receiving, catches and TDs. Murray ended up playing in 14 games and had 1124 yards last season with nine touchdowns and he was also strong out of the backfield with over 50 catches. Murray could be the key to the Cowboys this season and that could mean one main destination for Peterson is now off the table.
