Even though they are nine games out first place behind the Washington Nationals, technically speaking, the Miami Marlins are not out of it.
They are only five games behind in the Wild Card and having some moveable parts on their roster.
Miami has first baseman Carlos Lee and pitcher Anibal Sanchez who become free agents after this season.
The question is what or who exactly could they get for these players?
The could use some help in their bullpen, but help is soon on the way.
Formely known as Leo Nuñez, the Marlins will get Jose Juan Carlos Oveido back in their roster after serving an MLB suspension for faking his identity.
Emilio Bonifacio is coming back to help on offense at the right time. The Marlins find themselves without their slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.
Bonifacio will allow the Marlins to play small ball. They will count on on Justin Ruggiano to fill in for Stanton.
Ruggiano has hit 6 homers in 82 at-bats this season. He has a .390 average and 17 runs batted in.
Just to be on the safe side however, the Marlins could help out their pitching staff overall.
Zack Greinke would have been a good pitcher to pick up since he lives in the south, but their depleted farm system is not good enough to attract the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade.
In the end, it seems like the Marlins will keep Infante and Sanchez, but if another vacancy fills up, they could be the first players proposed in a trade.
