The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens are playing live on the NHL regular season schedule for opening night on Wednesday and the matchup is on TV from TSN and streaming online from NHL.com at 7 pm ET from the Air Canada Centre as these two Canadian clubs start off the 2014-15 slate as the first game on the calendar.
The Canadiens come into the season after making the playoffs and a deep run and now they look like a sleeper team in the east. No Canadian team has won the Cup in quite some time and now Montreal could be the team to do it. The team made it to the east finals and lost a very tough series to the Rangers and that came after the team upset the Boston Bruins. PK Subban has turned into a star and he will be key going forward and Montreal has the goalie in Carey Price and enough firepower up front to make some noise this season.
The Canadiens have one of the best goalies in the league in Price and he comes in after helping Montreal make a deep run in the playoffs. The team feels like it can go farther and they come in after a preseason loss against the Ottawa Senators. The Maple Leafs blew their chance the year before after taking a lead against the Bruins in Game 7 of their first round series and now they are trying to get back to the playoffs for all the long suffering fans up North.
The Maple Leafs come into the game after a win against the Detroit Red Wings in the preseason and they will be making their season debut against the Canadiens. The team next plays against the Penguins also at home on Saturday for their next game and the team comes into the season with high hopes for forward Brandon Kozun, who will be playing on the second line. Leafs president Brendan Shanahan knows what the fans feel and he is trying to bring the city and the nation a championship this year.
Montreal was able to keep many of the players from last season and they signed Subban to a massive deal after his breakout year. The team has four alternate captains over having one captain and that could be big with players like Subban, Andrei Markov as well as forwards Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty getting leadership roles. The team was strong last season and they expect to be even better with Price in net, who was eighth in the NHL with GAA last season. The East should be very tough and teams like the Penguins, Bruins and the Rangers will all be in the mix with the Canadiens.
