New York Knicks: Jason Kidd Arrested for DWI

Jul 16, 2012 12:32 AM EDT

New York Knick point guard Jason Kidd was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor of driving while intoxicated on Sunday morning, according to Southampton Town police.

A police spokesman said Kidd slammed his 2010 Cadillac Escalade into a telephone pole, breaking it into two, and went into the woods in Hamlet of Water Mill at 2 a.m.

Kidd was reportedly returning home after a party at the Hamptons. Kidd, who signed a three-year $9.5 million deal with the Knicks last week, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Southampton Hospital. He was later transferred to Southampton police headquarters to be processed, after which he was released under his own recognizance.

"Jason was involved in a single vehicle accident on his way back home from a charity function last night," Kidd's attorney, Ed Burke Jr., said in a statement.

"He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. Jason has pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge and awaits further court proceedings."

Witnesses said the guard sat in the wooded area for about 45 minutes, before cops arrived at the scene. "I saw him lying down, completely out of it." an eye-witness, Gautam Ahuja, is quoted as saying by the Daily News. "I think he was just so wasted."

"He was sprawled out," Ahuja's friend said. "He was sitting on the ground with his feet stretched out in front of him."

Entertainment website TMZ posted a picture of Kidd about an hour before the accident, being held up by another man as he left the East Hampton night club SL East.

The 39-year-old has been in trouble with the law before. He was arrested on a domestic violence charge in 2001, acknowledging that he had struck his wife.
