The New York Jets are not good right now, but they are hoping to get better. The team is currently sitting at 1-6 on the season, but seems optimistic about their chances of bouncing back in the coming weeks. They made the first real step in that effort over the weekend when they finalized a trade acquiring wide receiver Percy Harvin, only giving up a conditional draft pick in the process. With an under-achieving receiving corps, could Harvin be the real x-factor?
According to general manager John Idzik, the trade is a potential steal for the Jets. While addressing the media on Monday, Idzik said he was not concerned about the off-the-field issues of Harvin, instead remaining confident that the wide receiver will act accordingly with the team and be productive in the offense.
"I have a little bit of added knowledge from Seattle, knowing everyone that was involved," Idzik said, via NFL.com. "From players to coaches to medical staff, I know them very well, and you understand the circumstances to the best of your ability. But really, it's about how Percy is going to play and act here as a Jet. Given all that information -- we're in a people business. You don't know for sure until you get them on your campus, with your team and in your locker room to see how they're going to respond. That's in the rearview mirror. Learn from your experiences like anything else, and we're looking forward. He's looking forward. He's excited to be here, and we're excited to have him."
Harvin immediately becomes a fantasy favorite on the New York Jets. Right now, quarterback Geno Smith has Eric Decker and then a lot of inconsistent players. Harvin will jump up as one of his favorite targets movig forward and the receiver is confident he can be a real weapon for the team moving forward.
"I just think they got a lot of the pieces here," Harvin said. "You've got Geno (Smith), with a great veteran behind him. You got (Eric) Decker. You got two great running backs. They've always had a great defense here. So that's all exciting stuff to me. But all I remember is them being a very tough team. I know they have a few losses in their hands, but they was in every single game with a couple of plays here and there that could have easily switched the game. So I definitely think this team has all the pieces. So like I said, that's what excited me, knowing they already had the pieces here and I could just fit right in, try to make my little plays, and hopefully I can be a little difference."
Can the Jets move into playoff contention? Considering the New England Patriots are in their division, chances are slim. They would likely have to win out, being behind 17 teams in the wild card standings at the moment. However, getting Harvin certainly helps for the future and the development of the offense.
