Oct 23, 2014 06:48 PM EDT

UConn and East Carolina are playing on the ESPN college football schedule on Thursday night and the matchup has Connecticut visiting Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium before the Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies ACC matchup and this game is on ESPNU on TV and streaming live from the WatchESPN website as the Huskies and Pirates do battle in the American Athletic Conference at 7 pm ET.

Shane Carden has his team ranked this season and they come in at number 18 in the nation and he once again is putting together a very fine season for the Pirates. Carden was considered a sleeper Heisman candidate and while he isn't quite there, he has been very good and he is one of the main reasons why the team is 5-1 and still alive to match the best start in school history. Carden has passed for 16 TDs this season with over 2100 yards and he will be the player to watch in this matchup for the Pirates.

The team comes into the game after a 28-17 victory against South Florida that was an exciting matchup, as the Pirates had to make a comeback in the game. The team outscored the Bulls by three touchdowns and shut them down in the second half, allowing zero points and they were led by Breon Allen, who picked things up with Carden struggling a bit. Carden had 250 yards passing in the game, his lowest of the season, but Allen had over half of the rushing yards for the team with 124 on the ground and he has put together an impressive season.

Allen has 504 yards and four scores this season and he has been very solid for Carden, while Chris Hairston has nearly 200 yards and is second on the team in rushing. Justin Hardy has the most receptions for the team with 47 and he has 593 yards on the season, while Isaiah Jones has 42 catches for 478 yards and the two have combined for nine of Carden's TDs.

The Pirates are fourth in the nation in passing yards per game and that is why Carden has been looked at as one of the best QBs in the nation. The team is ranked in the top 15 in scoring and the defense has been very solid, ranked in the top 50 this season. The offense has been rolling and UConn likely will not be able to stop them, as they are allowing over 25 points per game and are only scoring about 12 per contest.

The Pirates come into the game after winning four straight games and they are looking very good and have gained momentum since losing to South Carolina in the second game of the season. The team won over North Carolina Central and North Carolina already and there aren't any more Carolinas on their schedule to play against. The team has a tough slate coming up with two of three on the road, including Temple and also Cincy. The team ends the season with UCF and that comes after the team plays Tulane, Tulsa and the Bearcats.
