Philadelphia Phillies News: Cole Hamels Discussing 6-year Deal of Over $130 Million

Jul 19, 2012 03:39 PM EDT

Ken Rosenthal has confirmed a report that the Philadelphia Phillies have offered their left-handed starter Cole Hamels a 6-year deal.

The money is still unsure, but Rosenthal believes it is somewhere around $138 million, which would exceed the amount the San Francisco Giants gave their ace Matt Cain.

The talks of the deal come amidst speculations that the Phillies were not willing to extend Hamels.

Rumors were flying around of a trade. Though talks of Hamels accepting the deal have not surfaced, it will be a really tough deal to pass on.

Hamels is only 28 years of age and will be turning 29 in December. It is almost vital for the Phillies to keep Hamels because he is younger than both Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay.

Lee will be turning 34 in August, while the Doc is sitting at 35 and recovering form arm issues.

Hamels has won a World Series. He is a three-time All-Star and has been a key piece in guiding the team to five consecutive National League East first place finishes.

Jon Heyman of CBS predicted a six-year deal to be adequate for the left-hander and Ken Rosenthal just finished giving him credit for the prediction on twitter.
